Background
From the 1980 Kenner Toy Fair Catalog:
Build R2-D2 and hundreds of other Droids!
Droid Factory is an exciting playset that stimulates a child's
imagination. With 33 interchangable parts, a child can build 5
different robots at a time, including R2-D2 with 3 legs or a 4-wheeled
robot that rolls. Moveable crane carries parts from "supply" to
"assembly". Footpegs enable JAWA action figures to "supervise"
production in control center area and throughout the factory. Specially
design ramp allows JAWA action figures to "roll out the droids" from
assembly line.
The Droid Factory was certainly one of the most inovative of all toys coming out of Kenner.
There were dozens of parts allowing kids to make an unlimted variety of droids, but also making it
tough for today's collectors to manage a complete set.
This same playset was later revised and released as Jabba's Dungeon, omitting the droid parts and adding three
action figures - either 8D8, Nikto, and Klatuu or Amanaman, Barada, and EV-9D9.
