Background

From a 1983 Kenner in-package catalog:

"The STAR WARS IMPERIAL TIE FIGHTER is ready to destroy the REBEL ALLIANCE. This dramatic reproduction of an Imperial space vehicle is now better than ever. Two sheets of self -sticking labels let kids chose between an IMPERIAL TIE FIGHTER that looks "brand new" or "battle-damaged". A special button releases the solar panels on either side of the cockpit to simulate a hit by an asteroid..."

In 1983, a Battle Damaged (BD) TIE Fighter replaced the standard version. The BD and original versions of the ship are physically identical. The only difference is that the BD TIE is molded in a blue plastic instead of the original white.
